Peri-implant Disease: Etiological Factors and Microbiological Approaches

Abstract

Peri-implant disease has been defined as an inflammatory process affecting the hard and/or soft tissues surrounding an implant in function. The major etiological factors of peri-implantitis are pathogenic microorganisms, which are very similar to the bacterial flora related to the periodontitis. It has been reported that orange complex and red complex microorganisms were highly associated with the development of periodontitis and lots of studies revealed that these were associated with the peri-implantitis as well. However, it is often reported that some other microorganisms not regarded to be related with the periodontitis are recently observed around the implants having the peri-implantitis. The purpose of this article is to describe the etiological factors and to review updated knowledge studied with microbiological approaches hoping to help clinicians to prevent, diagnose or treat the peri-implant disease.
